Historical Significance
The route of the Copperhill Special holds significant historical value. Originally part of the Louisville and Nashville (L&N) Railroad’s Atlanta Division, this line connected Etowah, Tennessee, to Marietta, Georgia. Constructed in the late 19th century, it played a crucial role in the economic development of the region, facilitating the transport of goods and passengers through the challenging terrain of the Appalachian Mountains. The Hiwassee Loop, a remarkable engineering feat, allows the train to gain elevation by looping over itself, offering passengers a unique experience and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
Scenic Highlights
As the train meanders along the Hiwassee River, passengers are treated to breathtaking vistas of lush forests, rolling hills, and the serene river below. The journey through the Hiwassee River Gorge is particularly stunning, with towering cliffs and diverse flora and fauna. The ascent through the Hiwassee Loop provides a unique perspective, as the train navigates a spiral track, showcasing the ingenuity of early railroad engineering.
