CREW SAFETY FIRST: DIESEL 5000 TO RUN INSTEAD OF STEAM ENGINE 4501 DUE TO HEAT

Safety-First: Diesel Replaces Steam

Crew Safety First: Diesel 5000 to Run Instead of Steam Engine 4501 Due to Heat

This weekend, due to extreme temperatures, we will be running the vintage diesel 5000 in place of the historic steam engine 4501. We prioritize the safety of our crew, especially during high temperatures. While the average temperatures might hover in the 90s, the conditions within the steam engine cab can exceed 110 degrees, posing significant risks. Ensuring the safety of our crew is paramount, and we appreciate your understanding and support as we strive to keep history rolling. The Legacy of Diesel 5000

Built in 1972, Southern Railway 5000 was the first of 257 GP38-2 locomotives purchased by the Southern Railway, producing 2,000 horsepower. This locomotive, with its high short hood, was specifically designed to meet the unique requirements of the Southern Railway. Acquired by TVRM in 2016 through a trade for Southern Railway 5033, the diesel 5000 has been restored to its original paint scheme and remains operational today.

Why This Change Is Necessary

The decision to operate the diesel 5000 instead of the steam engine 4501 is based on several key considerations:

  • Crew Well-being: High temperatures in the steam engine cab can exceed 110 degrees, creating hazardous working conditions for our crew.
  • Passenger Experience: Despite the change, we aim to provide a seamless, educational, and enjoyable experience for all our visitors.

Questions You Might Have

  2. Will the ride be different with the diesel engine?
    • While the diesel engine offers a different experience compared to the steam engine, it still provides a rich historical context. Passengers will enjoy a comfortable and informative ride.
  3. Can I still learn about the steam engine 4501 during my visit?
    • Yes, our staff will be available to share detailed information about the steam engine 4501 as well as the diesel 5000, ensuring a comprehensive educational experience.
