The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum (TVRM) proudly showcases the Southern Railway GP38-2 No. 5000, an iconic diesel-electric locomotive that symbolizes the transition from steam to diesel power in rail history. Built in 1972 as the first of 257 high short hood GP38-2 units, it highlights Southern Railway’s unique design approach aimed at crew safety and visual consistency. Acquired by TVRM in 2016 through a trade, this historically significant engine has been meticulously restored to its original paint scheme.
