Journey Through History
The Hiwassee River Scenic Railroad: Hook and Eye Line
Discover the scenic beauty of the Hiwassee River Scenic Railroad, operated by the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. These trains travel on tracks that were originally part of the Louisville and Nashville (L&N) Railroad’s Atlanta Division, stretching from Etowah, TN to Marietta, Georgia.
The line, finished in 1890, initially used switchbacks to climb the mountains. However, by 1898, a loop around Bald Mountain replaced these switchbacks, creating one of only three such loops in the United States. Together with a double “S” curve near Jasper, Georgia, this gave the route its nickname, the Hook and Eye Line.
In the early 1900s, the L&N established a new, more efficient route, relegating the Hook and Eye to secondary status. It continued serving the Copperhill mining operations until 2001, when CSX Transportation abandoned it. The Tennessee Overhill Heritage Association purchased the tracks in 2002, preserving them for preservation purposes, with the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum as the operator.
On your journey, you’ll experience breathtaking views of the Lower Hiwassee River Gorge, waterfalls, wildlife, mountains, and remnants of historic settlements. It’s an adventure that combines the splendor of nature with the rich history of Tennessee’s railroads.
